A fictional society often explains itself through small pieces of public language: a notice, an announcement, a repeated instruction. These details can be more revealing than a long explanation of how the world works. Choose one example and read it as something a character must encounter in daily life.

Identify the practical instruction

What does the notice ask people to do, avoid, or believe? Who appears to be speaking, and who is expected to obey? Keep the wording and its placement together. The same sentence may function differently on a private note and a public wall.

Notice what the text takes for granted. Perhaps a category of people is unnamed, or a rule is presented as ordinary without explanation. Mark the omission as a question rather than inventing an answer beyond the story’s evidence.

Compare words with actions

How do characters respond when the notice appears? They may follow it, ignore it, joke about it, or change their behaviour without comment. Their response helps place the language within the fictional world.

For a reading journal, pair one feature of the notice with one observed response. This keeps your interpretation anchored in the scene and leaves room for the story to complicate what initially looked like a straightforward rule.
